Petri Bäckström is known for his acting abilities as well as his will to play the game to the fullest. His operatic debut was in 2000, National Opera debut 2001 and Savonlinna Opera Festival debut 2003; he frequently visits all important opera venues in Finland. Petri Bäckström is a Timo Mustakallio Competition and Lappeenranta Singing Competition finalist. He studied singing at the Sibelius Academy (2000-2004), and won 2nd prize in the Finnish National Ballroom Dancing Championships (standard dances, 1994). He has studied opera singing in Rome (Renato Federighi), Vienna (Irina Gavrilovici), London (David Harper) and Hamburg (Anna Bergamo).
Petri´s repertoire ranges from classical opera to the most modern pieces; outside of concert halls and the opera scene he has worked in theatres all over Finland as well as in independent theatre and mixed artform: Rodolfo in Boheme, the title role of Tales of Hoffmann, Philip Glass´s Madrigal Opera (first recording), main role in Kirmo Lintinen´s opera Fitness, and a long list of operatic character roles including Pang, Goro, Gaston, Chekalinsky, Basilio, Monostatos and Spalanzani.
He has worked with the following conductors and directors: Esa-Pekka Salonen, Leif Segerstam, Hannu Lintu, Michael Güttler, Cornelius Meister, Susanna Mälkki, Marco Marelli and Jan Latham-König.
He was Artistic Director for the independent opera group Ooppera Skaala 2010-2013.
